How To Hack Spring Racing (But Still Be Glam)

Spring Racing season can be a great excuse to cheers with your mates, but it can also be a stressful time of year. Here’s our guide to keeping costs low and fun times high, with wardrobe, party and cocktail hacks that won’t break the bank and will keep you feeling ace throughout the day.

Borrow an outfit

Sure, you want to look nice for the races. That’s a given. But do you really need to buy a dress/tie/hat with a giant stuffed bird on it that you’ll only wear for one day? You’re essentially spending $500 on three Instagram stories. And Instagram stories disappear after a day. Nothing gold stays.

This is when you and your friends need to hustle. Pool your resources and swap dresses/ties for the day. In fact, make it a ‘Swap Party’. Make mimosas! Swap plates of appetisers! Now you’ve saved some money and completely fabricated an excuse for a get-together.

(Also: make a fascinator yourself! Go on, you can do it.)

Pack a picnic

It’s a well-known fact that food tends to be on the pricey side at the racing carnival. To be honest, the lines get so long that you should probably start lining up an hour before you think you’ll be hungry – otherwise you won’t even have the energy to lift your arm for touch-and-pay by the time you get to start of the line.

This hack is easy: pack a picnic! Bring a variety of cheeses and sturdy crackers. Give yourself the time to stuff some sandwiches that will have everyone in a five-kilometre radius seething with jealousy. Need some recommendations? How about a classic Reuben sandwich? This chargrilled chicken and olive number would go alright (if you can afford an avocado, that is). Our personal favourite has to be the chicken and turkey club. Oh, boy.

Oh, and bring pickles. Pickles are the best.

Wear comfortable shoes (or pack them)

Do we really need to remind you of this? Hm, okay. Those beautiful, glittering flatforms won’t be so fantastic when you roll your ankle at 11.01am and have to spend the rest of the day limping. Those shiny black loafers won’t seem so smart when your shoes fill with blood because you made the ill-advised decision to wear them in at the races.



Just be sensible. Okay?

Drink lots of water

You know what’s not cute? Severe dehydration and sunstroke! Keep the water levels high and you’ll experience a fantastically smug feeling all day. No-one can take that away from you, champ.

Know when to call it

Getting home from the races can be a real bore – lots of sweaty people squished into an un-moving train carriage can deflate even the best day.

Here’s our solution: leave the races early. You don’t have to miss the action, but make sure you sneak out before there’s a mad rush for the exits. If you want to avoid the FOMO that comes with leaving an event early, host a post-races dinner for you and your mates at home.

You don’t have to go overboard; maybe just serve a platter of delicious cheeses, meats, olives and pickles (duh) with some hearty crusty bread. If the mood takes you, you could even prepare some easy-to-share salads the night before, like potato salad or pasta salad. Whatever is easy and people can pick at.

What do we suggest serving with your snacks? We’d keep it classy with a Pimm’s Punch.

Pimm’s Punch

Ingredients:

• 1 cup (250ml) Pimm's No 1 Cup
• 600ml dry ginger ale
• 1/2 telegraph cucumber, sliced
• 1/2 orange, sliced
• 1 lime, sliced
• Crushed ice, to serve

Method:

Combine all the ingredients in a tall jug. Stir to combine, then serve.
