Prost! Skål! Kanpai! Salud! Cin cin! It doesn’t matter how you say ‘Cheers!’, beer is so universally loved that there’s at least one beer festival in the world where you’ll fit right in. Almost every country has a brew-based bash to its name, and while we all know about Oktoberfest, there are some other gems that beer-lovers should add to their bucket list. We’ve collated a few of our favourite beer festivals from around the globe, along with some worldly beer recommendations to replicate the feeling of an international beer-tour – minus the jetlag.

Great American Beer Festival

Held annually in Denver, Colorado, the Great American Beer Festival really lives up to its name. It’s great. It’s American. And there’s a whole lot of beer – over 4,000 types from more than 800 breweries, in fact. That means you’re bound to find something you like. On top of that, there’s a beer competition that awards gold, silver and bronze medals to the three beers that best represent each beer style, as determined by a Professional Judge Panel. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it. It all goes down over a weekend in September.

To get into a true red-white-and-blue mood at home, we’d recommend trying a bottle of Miller Genuine Draft.

BeerFes, Tokyo

If you needed another reason to go to Japan, enter BeerFes – the country’s largest beer festival and a world highlight for hop heads. The event sells tickets for three-and-a-half hour tasting sessions that come with a complimentary ‘best aroma glass’ – a fancy vessel designed to bring out the very best in the beer you’re trying. The festival happens every June in the heart of Tokyo, and it’s always a sell-out event, so make sure you secure your ticket before you go booking your flight.

To experience the Land of the Rising Sun without leaving your house, we’d recommend a refreshing bottle of Asahi Super Dry.

Belgian Beer Weekend

Want a side of waffles with your wheat beer? Some pommes frites (and mayo) with your pilsner? Or maybe just a blonde beer to toast your arrival to Brussels? Then the Belgian Beer Weekend is for you. Every September, dozens of breweries – big and small – descend on Brussels to serve almost every variety of beer imaginable against the Insta-worthy backdrop of the city’s Grote Markt (Grand-Place). There’s even a celebration of Saint-Arnould, the Patron Saint of brewers.

Enjoy your own Belgian beer weekend at home with a bottle of the country’s most famous export, Stella Artois.

Beerfest Asia

Over 600 beers. Beer workshops. Live tunes. Plenty of gourmet treats. And all in the beaut surrounds of The Meadow in Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay. Now in its tenth year, Beerfest Asia puts the ‘fest’ into ‘festival’ with its long weekend of partying near the start of September. The event, which is the largest of its kind in South East Asia, is set up a bit like a music festival, but with beer taking the centre stage instead of rock stars. And rightfully so.

To sample the tastes of Singapore without the long-haul flight, sip on a Tiger Beer, order a laksa and pretend you’re in a hawker hall.
