February 22 is officially Margarita Day, so we’re here to shake our maracas and celebrate all things margarita! From the classic Margarita recipe to fruity and exotic variations, we have some exciting cocktail mixing to get through.

The classic Margarita

This delicious lime cocktail is where it all started. The origins of this popular drink might be a little bit murky, but one thing’s for sure, somewhere along the way it involves tequila, lime, Cointreau and salt!

40mL Jose Cuervo Silver Tequila
20mL Cointreau
20mL lime juice
1 lime wedge to garnish
Salt to garnish

Load a cocktail shaker with ice and add the tequila, Cointreau and lime juice. Shake for around 30 seconds. Brush the rim of a glass with the lime wedge and then roll on a sheet of baking paper dusted in salt. Strain the cocktail into the glass and place the wedge on the salted rim.

Watermelon Margarita

Nothing says summer quite like watermelon, making this cocktail an absolute cracker to take your rind off the heat. If you’re feeling seedy after reading that terrible pun, we admit it was a bit melondramatic.

Ingredients (serves 4):

190mL Jose Cuervo Silver Tequila
60mL lime juice
300g watermelon, cut into cubes
2 cups of ice
Salt to garnish

Place the tequila, lime juice and watermelon in a blender and mix until pureed. Add 2 cups of ice and blend until crushed and icy. Rim glasses with salt and a lime wedge before serving.

Grapefruit and Jalapeno Margarita

Drinking a chilli infused bev might not be your idea of a refreshing cocktail, but this spicy margarita cocktail works surprisingly well and has a bit of everything going for it – spicy, sweet, sour and salty. The chilli is totally optional, but then you will have to change the name or confuse your guests.

Ingredients (serves 6):

375mL ruby red grapefruit juice
250mL Jose Cuervo Silver Tequila
125mL Cointreau
125mL lime juice
3 jalapeno chillies, halved lengthways
75g caster sugar
Lime wedges to serve

Combine the grapefruit and lime juice in a metal container and freeze. Dissolve sugar in 60mL of water on the stove, stir until syrupy and set aside to cool. Mash the frozen grapefruit mixture with a fork and place in a blender, add syrup, tequila, Cointreau and 1 cup of ice. Blend until smooth. Pour into salt-rimmed glasses and garnish with lime wedge and half a jalapeno.

Grand Margarita

For those whose pants are well and truly fancy, this deluxe margarita drink doesn’t add any wacky ingredients, but it does up your tequila game with top-shelf bottles.

40mL Espolon Tequila Blanco
20mL Grand Marnier
20mL lime juice
1 lime wedge to garnish
Pink Himalayan salt to garnish

Shake the tequila, lime juice and Grand Marnier in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Strain into a glass rimmed with pink salt and garnish with a lime wedge. You fancy!
