The Mother’s Day Movie Guide (And The Wine To Match)

You should spend this Mother’s Day hanging out with your mum/grandma/aunt/surrogate mum doing what they want to do. That probably means watching a fun movie and serving them delicious wines! We’ve got some suggestions of the movies (and wines) these special ladies will love.

There’s no denying that at 3 hours and 15 minutes, it’s a little on the long side. But chances are your labour took longer than that, so suck it up and let your mum enjoy some Leo eye candy. Since Titanic was pretty fancy, we suggest you treat your mum to some classy Champagne, like Mumm Cordon Rouge Champagne NV as you hum away the theme song that will now be stuck in your head for a week. Enjoy!

Pretty Woman

We don’t know what it is about Richard Gere, but mums just can’t get enough of him. Realistically you could watch anything staring the ol’ silver fox and you should be in the clear. But if you do go with this classic and don’t serve a white wine like Rapaura Spring Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and strawberries for the viewing, you’ll be making a “Big mistake. Big. Huge.”

Mamma Mia!

Be warned – this is a musical. You just have to accept the fact that there will be singing, okay? Meryl Streep will be singing, your mum will be singing, and frankly, you’ll probably find yourself singing too. So be a “Super Trouper” and just go with it. It will make her happy. Endure…err, enjoy this fun sing-along with a fine glass of red, like Earthworks Barossa Valley Shiraz .

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

It’s the type of feel-good story mums find irresistible. Like a moth to a flame, she’ll be drawn to the lovable characters, the crazy but caring family and a makeover montage. There’s plenty of gags to keep you entertained too, so if you settled on this one – good for you! We’d recommend going into this one with a glass of Pepperjack Barossa Shiraz and maybe a side of olives as a nice touch.

Any movie starring Sandra Bullock

We’ll make it easy for you. Sandra Bullock is every mum’s imaginary best friend, so you really can’t go wrong with anything she’s in. You could go vintage Sandy with Speed, funny Sandy with The Heat or even award-winning Sandi with The Blind Side. Possibilities are endless. You know what, why not let your mum choose? Because that’s the kind of thoughtful and considerate child you are to her. Go you! We’re so proud. Top this successful Mother’s Day treat with a delicious beer, like Furphy!

A little left off centre? Maybe. But it doesn’t have to be all rom-coms and love stories on the menu for Mother’s Day. Mums like a good thriller, especially if it’s starring another mum favourite: Liam Neeson. Just be warned, she’ll probably never want you to travel to Paris or Europe or anywhere out of her sight really. But it’s a good movie, so… worth it? Enjoy the on-screen thrills with an off-screen whisky on the rocks, like Jameson Caskmates Stout edition.
