Winning a million flybuys points is good and all (we’re rooting for you!). But when you get them… what do you actually do with them?

Word is that a million flybuys points can buy you $5000 worth of groceries from Coles Supermarkets. And we’ve got the hot tips on the best (and easiest to prep) snacks to keep on hand when your mates come over for a celebratory bev.

Freshly baked brownies

Sounds like it’s hard snack to nail, but it isn’t! The best thing about baking brownies is that it’s ridiculously fancy (how often in life are you presented with a warm baked good?) but if you make it from a packet mix (and there’s plenty of those at Coles), it’s also super easy. Top it off when some ice cream and you’ve got a sublime meal on your hands.

You know what goes well with chocolate? Red wine. We’d recommend a red like Taylors Estate Pinot Noir to pair with those delicious, gooey brownies.

Doing veggies the fancy way will be a crowd-pleaser. Celery, carrot, cucumber, peppers, broccoli and cauliflower are always winners and when you blanch them, they take on a nice bright colour. Chuck some hummus on the table and you’ve got a fancy mix.

A fresh snack like this requires a fresh drink to accompany it. We’d recommend a gin and tonic – using a gin like Tanqueray– with a stick of cucumber in there for added freshness.

Spicy popcorn

Popcorn? That’s not a fancy snack! But spicy popcorn sure is. All you need to do is pop your kernels with canola oil, butter, sriracha and salt – all supermarket staples. Suddenly you have a delicacy on your hands!

It’s nice to match a spicy dish with a refreshing drink that doesn’t taste overpowering. We’d recommend a a light-tasting beer like Pure Blonde to pair with this one.

Sweet potato chips

Potato chips? Pfft, that’s old news. If you really want to impress your friends, cook up some sweet potato chips. Literally all you need is sweet potatoes, canola oil cooking spray and salt, then you slice them up thinly and cook them in the microwave for 4 minutes. Easy!

This one feels a bit fancy, so sparkling wine must just be the shout. Pick up a bottle of Yellowglen NV White after you’ve gotten all the ingredients.

If you present your friends with homemade quesadillas as a snack, you will forever be the legend of your friendship group. Your mates don’t need to know that they only took 10 minutes to prepare and cook.

Grab a can of refried black beans, corn, a packet of tasty cheese, tortillas and a couple of handfuls of mushrooms. Cook up the mushrooms in a pan and then assemble the quesadilla, cooking it on a pan or in a sandwich press. We reckon something like this deserves an equally snazzy drink – like a bottle of James Squire Swindler.
