With the AFL and NRL grand final matches falling on the same weekend this year, we think that it’s the perfect time to celebrate some of the best in the game – with some custom cocktails, of course. Join us in raising a toast to some of the legendary players – past and present – and set the mood for the big weekend of footy to come.

Spicy Buddy Mary

Much like the man himself, this cocktail packs of hell of a kick. We’re switching out the more traditional vodka for tequila in this recipe, and dressing it with hot sauce, chilli flakes, and horseradish to lend it a fiery personality.

60mL of El Jimador Reposado Tequila or Jose Cuervo Especial Tequila
120mL of tomato juice
20mL lemon juice
1 tsp horseradish
Dash of hot sauce
Dash of Worcestershire sauce
Celery stalk, to garnish

Rim a tall glass with chilli flakes. Combine all ingredients in the glass over ice, and garnish with celery stalk.

The Jason Taumalatte

This coffee-infused cocktail might be inspired by the second-row, but it’s a first-rate beverage. Packed full of caffeine, this one will keep you on your toes.

20mL Patrón XO Café
20mL Baileys
20mL fresh espresso
White sugar
Coffee beans, to garnish

Rim a martini glass with sugar, then combine and shake the rest of the ingredients in a cocktail shaker over ice. Strain into glass, and garnish with coffee beans.

Gary Gimlet Jr

With a proud heritage that stretches back several generations, the Gimlet might be a little old – but it’s never out of style. Kick back with this distinguished cocktail.

60mL gin
30mL lime juice
15mL sugar syrup

Combine ingredients over ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake, then strain into a coupe glass.

The Jordan Rumpana Caipirinha

Inspired by the formidable wing player who moved to the Gold Coast when he was 10 years old, we think it’s only appropriate to mix up a rum-based cocktail. For a more tropical rendition, substitute the Bundy for Baron Samedi Dark Spiced Rum

50mL Bundaberg UP Rum
1 tsp sugar
3 lime wedges

Muddle lime and sugar in a glass, add ice, pour over rum.

Dirty Dusty Martini

The addition of olive brine to this martini might make it a little rough around the edges, but this cocktail is certain to be a fan favourite. For extra style points, customise your martini glass with drawn-on tattoos.

70mL of vodka
1 tbsp of dry vermouth
2 tbsp of olive brine
2 green olives, to garnish
