Melissa’s Paddock, our smallest block, is inspired by the very best Hermitage examples of the Rhône Valley. It is bottled as “Syrah” in recognition of its refined structure, savoury flavour and eloquently spiced nuance. Our Melissa’s Paddock Syrah seeks to make a profound statement of intent that builds on the formidable groundwork laid by our Estate Syrah but with its own inimitable characteristics of a unique site and its inherent powerful signature expression.
The unusually warm and truncated 2016 vintage is the third release for our flagship Syrah and features a dense brooding and slowly unfurling complex nose of mulberry, white pepper, fennel, cloves, stalk, spice, Christmas mince pies and charry oak with an alluring tapenade and smoked charcuterie savoury edge.

26/5/2020Medium to full ruby colour with vestiges of purple as well as brick-red edges, revealing some age development. The bouquet is earthy, undergrowth-like and the humus, vegetal notes suggest a high proportion of whole-bunches, including stalks in the ferment. Ashy notes and root vegetables. It's full-bodied but soft and fleshy, rounded and savoury. Sweet spices deep in the middle-palate. Some grittiness in the tannins. An idiosyncratic style that seeks to do something more interesting with the shiraz grape. It succeeds, but it may not be to everyone's taste. I thought it was very delicious.

10/2/2020Medium purple colour with red edges. Aromatics are compelling and more than a little Rhôney: red licorice, spiced plums and white pepper. Earthier notes, turned-earth and clove. First sip reveals just enough flesh and fruit weight, tightly-wound and grounded in red berry fruits. Whole-bunch notes are soft and subdued. Treads the fine line with confidence. Will live for years

26/5/2020Deep in colour, it offers a wonderfully complex bouquet of musky dried floral aromas, spices like mild pepper and cloves, foresty complexities, and a core of plum and berry fruit. Everything is in superb harmony and carried perfectly through the smooth, seamless, beautifully layered and lingering palate. The balance is superb and it has lovely flow through super-fine finishing tannins. Wow!

26/8/2024Medium to deep ruby red colour. Dark cherry, mulberry, wakame and musk aromatics. Medium to full weight, dark blue and red fruits sit at its core with cinnamon, cola and wakame notes all surrounding it. But it's more about texture and flow here; there’s underlying power to the tannins but they remain well hidden, with a glossy silken feel as it carries to an impressively long finish. A fantastic wine, showing a different face of Australian shiraz that may be less known
