Product Details

A name that needs very little introduction in the world of iconic Australian wine. The wines produced under the Rockford label are classic and consistent expressions of some of the finest vineyards in the Barossa Valley.

The Rockford wineworks and apparatus on Krondorf Road at Tanunda date back to the 1850s. The artisanal proprietors employ traditional techniques to assemble one of the nation's most singularly commanding wines. Parcels of the best dry grown old vine Shiraz, some of which were planted in the nineteenth century, from a select cabal of growers, operating vineyards in the Barossa, Kalimna and Ebenezer, Moppa Springs and the Eden Valley, are treated to an ancient basket press followed by vinfication in old fashioned open fermentation vessels.

Huon Hooke
7/11/2022Deep, bold red colour laced with purple; plum pudding, fruitcake and subtle herb aromas, a suggestion of roasting meats, oak not discernible, but the fruit is savoury, mellow and not especially primary. It’s medium-full bodied and the same softly savoury but drying tannins and flavours are present, all consistent with the maker's style. There is a restrained fruit sweetness at its core, and appealing balance in the flavour, bouquet and mouth-feel. Good length and satisfying to drink. A sotto voce Basket Press, drinking well already.

Huon Hooke
10/11/2025Deep ruby with a good tint of purple in the rim and a complex bouquet of warm forest undergrowth, dry earth and brush. The wine is full bodied and loaded with savoury flavours, masses of supple, fine, powdery tannins in good harmony. Concentrated but effortlessly so. A classic Barossa shiraz in a more savoury, earthy, mellow guise—rather than a boldly fruity, fresh style.
