Our community in mind
Responsible Service of Alcohol

Our purpose to help adult Australians lead happier and healthier lives by drinking in a responsible and sustainable way carries specific responsibilities when operating our liquor stores in the community. We are committed to the safety and wellbeing of our team and our customers and aim to always promote the responsible sale and consumption of alcohol.

We take our liquor retailing obligations seriously and are committed to harm minimisation initiatives to reduce the misuse and abuse of alcohol in the community. We go beyond our legal obligations and are proud of our strong and pro-active approach to the Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA).

Coles Liquor is a founding member and key contributor to DrinkWise, an independent not-for-profit organisation that aims to promote a healthier and safer drinking culture through informative and educational campaigns. Coles Liquor has been using the DrinkWise pregnancy warning label on its private label and exclusive products since 2012.

Coles Liquor is a member of key industry bodies, Alcohol Beverages Australia (ABA) and Retail Drinks Australia (RDA). We are signatory to the ABAC Responsible Alcohol Marketing Code which is designed to ensure alcohol is marketed in a responsible manner. In line with the Code, we also have a provision for customers to self-exclude and request to not be serviced liquor products via online orders.

Coles Liquor also supports industry voluntary commitment and initiatives. For example, we are signatory to The ABAC Responsible Alcohol Marketing Code which is designed to ensure alcohol is marketed in a responsible manner.

We are a member of over 100 Liquor Accords nationally and work collaboratively with community groups, the police and regulators to help find local solutions to local issues related to alcohol harm in the community.

We have extensive training programmes making sure we serve the community responsibly and every single team member must hold a Responsible Service of Alcohol qualification before they commence work for us. Key elements of the training includes:

  • We ask for ID if a customer looks 25 years of age or younger.
  • We refuse service to customers showing signs of intoxication.
  • We aim to eliminate the risks or confusion associated with supplying alcohol to young adults, by refusing service to anyone in full school uniform.
  • We ensure a first home delivery is attended and have our delivery staff ask for ID and check for signs of intoxication.
