Product Details

Lean into a glass of Brokenwood Graveyard Shiraz and you can almost hear the whispers of legends, stories and lore that have infused into this hero of the Hunter Valley. There are the founders including James Halliday, who, along with friends including the lauded winemaking personality Len Evans, made the first vintage of Brokenwood in 1973.

Perfect bright mid density colour with purple tints just adding to the appeal. The use of large format French oak allows the red spice and bramble of the Hunter Shiraz fruit to shine. Initial palate is very supple and complete, giving a lovely flow from start to finish. The importance of acidity can never be underestimated as this underpins the structure. It is a juicy acidity and in complete harmony with the ripe tannins and perfectly balanced oak to make this one of the great Graveyards.

12/8/2013Medium to deep red/purple colour. A strong 'shoe leather' aroma dominates at first - not very appealing. There's a strange earthy note as well. The palate seems a touch pinched and lean and fades to a big tannin conclusion. After a couple of hours, it transformed into a much more complex spicy, earthy, leathery smelling shiraz of captivating character. It also grew in palate, becoming quite rich and concentrated, dense and high in tannins, with a serious dryness (as opposed to fruit sweetness) but not austerity. Hints of sour cherry. An excellent Graveyard with a long future ahead of it. Still good after 24 hours on ullage.

17/12/2018Deep red/purple hue and a rich vanilla, dark chocolate aroma. The wine is ripe and fleshy with density, depth and weight, but also elegance. Medium to full-bodied, but nicely concentrated, sumptuous and impressive. Liberal extract. A long-term wine.

17/9/2025Deep, dark and inky plum in colour. Lifted and heady aromas of satsuma plum, mulberry, ferrous earth, Asian spice, dried herbs and an earthy, brambly edge. Really youthful, primary and plush in flavour. There’s a super concentrated core of dark fruits, clovey oak, firm, textured tannins and perky, poised acidity. Great power, presence and length, a benchmark Australian shiraz
