Established in 1985, Cloudy Bay was one of the first five wine makers to venture into Marlborough. Pelorus embodiesthe crispy sophistication of a sparkling wine: subtly combining fresh and fruity chardonnay notes with rich and savoury hints of pinot noir.
Today, Cloudy Bay not only captures the essence of Marlborough but also embodies New Zealand's luxury to the world. Cloudy Bay's Natural Luxury is a luxury of space and time, of intimate moments and nature’s rarest qualities.
The pale straw colour and aromas of ripe citrus fruits indicate its chardonnay origins. A layered bouquet of apple and lemon citrus complements fresh bready notes derived from two years bottle ageing on lees. The deliciously crisp palate displays toasty, creamy complexity, enhanced by a lingering nutty finish.
Pelorus was designed as an aperitif but the palate offers significant depth making it a delightful partner to many dishes. The favourite pairing is with freshly shucked oysters & a squeeze of lemon. Also consider smoked salmon, seared scallops, wild greens with citrus vinaigrette and honey & citrus glazed chicken skewers.
10/12/201225% reserve wine, 3 years on lees. Medium straw-yellow colour. Creamy yeast overtones on predominantly chardonnay fruit, peach and nougat-like aromas. Fresh acidity, but soft and rounded, with an easygoing texture and quite lightweight. Has delicacy, fresh lively acidity and a fairly low liqueur level. Crisp, aperitif style. Dry, acid finish.

18/6/2020Light straw-yellow colour with a slight brassy tint. The bouquet shows toasty, iced pastries, nougat and almond meal, with meringue overtones, the palate is rich and full with a very dry but soft balance, the acidity nicely controlled and the balance harmonious. Fluffy texture. Long finish. A quite outstanding wine for its station.

24/2/2015Lovely wine. Soft texture, subtle mealy favours , no hint of aldehydes. Soft, exquisitely balanced, long. The perfect Pelorus and a long way from the first release wines.

25/2/2015Stylish sparkler with appealing subtle yeastiness and a nice mix of elegant Chardonnay with more fleshy, chocolatey Pinot Noir. Balanced and resonably complex. Dry with a good length

25/2/2015This chardonnay-dominant Methode spends two years on the yeast lees before being disgorged. Although pinot noir occupies a minority role in the blend, it asserts itself with rich chocolate-like flavours and added palate weight. A portion of the base wine is help in large oak vats of small French oak barriqes to give added complexity from the decomposing yeast lees and the oak. The wine is crisp and fresh with apple-like chardonnay flavours evident. They’ve got the dosage perfectly right - its dry, but not searingly dry.

25/2/2015The most explosive wine in the tasting it frothed all over my desk. I forgave it when I tasted my glass - pretty, fresh and slightly floral characters with pronounced fruit contrasing with subtle chocolate-box-like yeast characters (or is it Pinot Noir influence).

25/2/2015Rich, mouth filling Methode with plenty of bready, biscuity yeast autolysis supported by subtle citrus fruit flavours. This wine has a great texture, real power, an impeccable balance and a delicious texture. I cannot remember it being this good.

25/2/2015Predominantly Chardonnay with gentle apple, hay/straw, bready autolysis and mineral characters. Subtle wine with an ethereal texture. Very “correct” wine with a perfect balance that gives a gently drying finish.
