Product Details

d'Arenberg's flagship wine is also a flag bearer for the region. Beyond an array of dark fruits, lie intriguing notes of game, smoked meats, truffle and green pepper. There's still chocolate and earthiness so there's no mistaking the wine's origin, but the new vintage offers depth and complexity that few from McLaren Vale can measure up to.

‘Part hand, part machine-harvested, crushed and destemmed, 203 weeks on skins in an open-headed down fermenter, matured for 20 months in French oak (8% new) and a dab of Amercian oak. Deep crimson-purple; ultra-full-bodied and densely packed with the darkest black fruits, licorice, 70% cacao dark chocolate and ripe tannins.' - 95 Points | James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2018.

3/3/2020Deep, dense purple/red colour, with concentrated chocolate and plum aromas and flavours, a fair degree of oak but not overdone, and a trace of reduction on the early nose. Dense, powerful, concentrated but all things in harmony. A biggie but a goodie.

23/1/2024Deep red, a solid colour with a tinge of purple, and aromas of ironstone, iron-filings and rusty metal. The palate is full-bodied, concentrated and a trifle lean in its shape, firm tannins are drying and the wine has line and length but not a lot of flesh or fruit-sweetness. Very drying aftertaste that demands hearty food. A long-term proposition.

4/2/2026Deep and dark red with a tint of purple; the bouquet suggests superripe, slightly stewed black fruits, bitumen and coal dust, earth and freshly ground black pepper. Very full bodied and loaded with drying and somewhat blocky tannins, which cry out for a hearty protein meal. This is a concentrated and massively tannic wine that will really come into its own with food, and should age profitably.
