The native red superstar of Tuscany, Sangiovese, makes for one of the simplest and most pleasurable food and wine matches there is.
Don Lewis and Narelle King make wine in Spain as well as in Victoria, offering Miro, a multi-varietal Spanish blend, and from Australia, nebbiolo, sangiovese, shiraz, tempranillo and pinot grigio. Lewis and King note the balance between tannin and acidity in Italy's thin-skinned sangiovese, which, they say, is known for its earthy more than fruity notes. Their comments sum up this delicious red. It is medium bodied with ripe, cherry-like fruit flavours tightly bound by the assertive, fine tannins and brisk acidity. The earthy savouriness and persistence of the tannins sets it apart from Australia's generally more fruity red wine styles.
20/4/2022Medium to deep red colour with a glint of purple and a walnutty, dried herb and earthy bouquet rather than berry fruit. The wine is firm and grippy in the mouth with abundant tannin, the mid-palate full and rich and generous, balancing the significant tannins. A serious red with proper sangiovese structure and real potential. Time will build some complexity here.

Huon Hooke
24/6/2025Medium-depth ruby colour with tinges of purple and brick; pencil shavings, mixed forest berries and earth on the nose. The tannins coat the entire mouth and dominate the savoury, slightly forward-developed flavours. Brick-dust, dry earth, terracotta and mellow red fruits. A very structural red that brings to mind Italian versions of the same grape. A smart sangiovese, true to the grape.
